Commissioners:
The BPT is composed of nine (9) commissioners appointed by the Governor and approved by the Senate. The commissioners are appointed to staggered four year terms. Commissioners travel throughout the State to conduct hearings at institutions in panels of two, one of which must be a commissioner and one must be a deputy commissioner. The panels were originally composed of three persons, two of which had to be commissioners. The reduction to two person panels was the result of a backlog of lifer hearings and subsequent legislation (SB 778).
